MIRROR MAFIA

CHAPTER 1

A line of people waiting for food from a pantry stretches around the block you would never know it but everyone there had dreams and has a story that brought them to this location.

Several in particular has the most amazing story to tell.

Max Nunez Miragotti as a child he moves from a spacious apartment in Queens to the Belmont section of the Bronx, during the early 80's with his mother Margret and younger brother John to a tiny one bedroom apartment, the first year was a hardship they never knew before. The brothers promised themselves, they would never go hungry again, especially after a failed attempt at frying a rat on a hot skillet, the creature cornered under their mother’s bed and killed with a broom handle, they; decided there had to be an easier way.

From the kitchen window with curtains drawn back, Max saw how the local drug dealers would command so much respect; parked out in front with their expensive cars and gold chains around their necks, and the added stack of pizza boxes ready to be devour for their nightly rowdy parties, that would always wake his neighbors, as he looked upon his poor meal before him, with blood pooling around the rodents tiny little face the stark contrast didn't go unnoticed.

He would look back and fourth, from the cooking pan to the pizza party taken place next door, Max began to feel left behind and thought there was something seriously wrong with the picture before him.

He could hardly remember the last time he had takeouts, his mouth watering for a taste of it again.

He had heard this side of NYC on Arthur Avenue had the best restaurant and pizza of all times.

The thought went across his mind maybe he should beg his neighbors or shop owners in the area for a slice or two, for him and his little brother . . . who took just about any situation at hand in stride.

Unlike Max was impatient, this time was no different and he began licking his lips, even more so than before, his stomach punched him into a growling ache, his arms pressed upon the glass window . . . in despair, however, begging or panhandling was something he could not envision. His pride would not allow him to stoop to that level ever again, it was beginning to become a theme that started the last few months before they had arrived.

He had not a clue how to gut or skin and animal, surly he would hurt himself and land in the hospital or worse . . . Die!!!

Ignorant he had no concept of the true dangers ahead.

He pushed himself to be brave and took in a deep breath . . . and lit the stove pilot on.

The ordeal quickly came to an end, when the sounds of excitement and cries of joy overwhelmed his brother John.

Their lives potentially saved; when their mother just then came home with groceries, a luxury that was not commonplace.

Immediately he tossed the rat into the garbage and the pan into the covers, the entire event she would know not for many years to come.

It was a water shed mark, that brought the siblings closer together, shortly after they joined a gang of thieves, shoplifting anything they could, they became very good at their illicit trade, robbing whole grocery stores of all their merchandise.

When food was not an issue the gang traded one another’s stolen goods like baseball cards, as if it were currency.

The love of sports were one of a few things minorities felt they had in common with the rest of society, when racial tensions would explode into a war zone…and colored lines were drawn onto the concrete, stained by the blood of its victims, graffiti artist and taggers would cover the rest as a memorial tribute.
